Conspire to Out Conspire

How's this for Mr. Consistency?

The one candidate in the race who is supposed to be solid as a oak, never faltering or swaying on his stances, who has been beating the same political drum for decades without any inconsistencies, who is always standing up for Liberty and Freedom and never panders to any base or media establishment, gets confronted with the fact that one of his prized supporters and endorsers is a bona-fide homophob that believes we should use the death penalty against homosexuals and what's he do?  He wipes it all clean from his website of course.  Down the Memory Hole it goes!

Anyone who claims Ron Paul is a steadfast man of principles and ideas is a liar.  He's a typical Republican hack that panders just like every politician in the world.  His supporters, though, will claim that Paul knew nothing about his once proudly-touted supporter's right wing platform and that anyone who brings it up is only conspiring to stop Ron Paul because they fear the Freedom and Liberty he will unleash upon America.  Remember everything in their world is a conspiracy.  Him trying to cover up his extremist views is no different.

End of Year Cleaning

As we approach another new year and yet another presidential election, I wanted to pause for a brief moment and look back at TFB over the years.

I began this blog in the summer of 2008.  It was a presidential year just like 2012.  And it was a way for me to participate in political conversations outside of the boring passerby chat with friends.  Since that time the blog has changed dramatically.  I remember in 2008 having a very vivid Poll Center up and working that tracked numerous polls throughout the country.  I also remember having a McCain fact-check running continuously.  I'm not sure if we'll do all that this cycle or not.  There's still a long way to go before November and the best bet is to wait and see who the president will be running against and to wait and see the new technology for polling in terms of html that will be available for me to steal.

In the meantime, I want to take a quick look back at where the blog has come and where we might be going.

As you can see from the chart below, readership has come full circle.

We have finally surpassed our avg. daily page views as set in 2008.  My reasoning is that once again the presidential race is approaching us and naturally a political blog is going to increase in hits.  Or at least that's the plan for having a political blog.  I hope to see us get 10,000 page views a day by November.  I realize that might be asking a lot for a blog that is less than part-time.

As some of you know, I work full time.  I do some consulting on the side.  I'm an assistant editor on another blog.  I'm married.  I have two-year old twin boys at home.  I'm a very busy guy.  I have help with the blog from some friends but for the most part it's just me.  So there are some weeks I can do 10 hours of work for the blog and other weeks I don't have 1 hour to spare.  This might change for the new year.  It's hard to say really.  Or it's possible I will have less time than ever and have to hang it up once again.  My goal, though, is to tough it out for the year.  Expand on contributor posts and to even dare touch upon another Polling Center.

Whatever happens here's to a Happy New Year!  Stay Safe and Drink Responsibly.

Dow Is Up 85% Since Obama Took Office

Don't look now (careful Fox News viewers but this will defy your Fantasy World) but the Dow is up 85% since Barack Obama became president.

Any president would love an 85% gain in the Dow in 3 years time.  Yet this president barely gets a mention of such great news.

The Dow lost value under 8 years of George Bush.  He became the first president since Herbert Hoover to have the Dow lose money on his watch.  In fact, the Dow lost almost 2,700 points under George Bush.  But an 85% increase under Obama gets nary a mention.

Things aren't great.  But they are way better than when George Bush and the Republicans were in power.

Republican Chair Arrested for Filming Naked Boys

The Republican Walk With God just keeps getting sturdier and sturdier....who could have guessed something like this would happen??:

A former New Jersey Republican city chair has been arrested on multiple charges of using a hidden camera to videotape naked boys using communal showers at a Catholic high school.
Patrick Lott, the 54-year-old assistant principal at Bernardsville Middle School since 2009, is facing more than 50 counts including endangering the welfare of a child and invasion of privacy at Immaculata High School in Somerville, where he volunteered as a coach.
Investigators raided Lott’s home about two weeks ago and seized computer files that included videos of naked male students in the shower. Nine or more of the students were under the age of 16, according to WABC.

Newt Smacks Down Idiotic Birther Question

Even though I know it's not going to happen, I can't help but feel remorse for not having Newt Gingrich be the GOP's latest crusty old white guy.  Why?  Well, one thing a Newt candidacy would do is make the 2012 race about issues.  Newt loves to talk issues.  He's actually really good at it.  One of the best, maybe second only to Bill Clinton.  Probably one of Newt's best performances is his beautiful defense of the individual mandate from as far back as the eons of 2008.  Newt is a wonk, I'll give him that.  Without Newt there really isn't a candidate that will talk issues.

Proof that Newt would much prefer to talk rather than smear is yesterday in Storm Lake, IA (I've been there biatches!).  When asked by a very crazy, right wing extremist and Fox News viewer why President Obama is allowed to be president since he has never shown his birth certificate (which is a total lie), Newt immediately struck the question down and demanded the issues are what presidential politics should be about.  Kudos to Newt for smacking the crazy.  It really is a shame there isn't any other Republican candidate able and willing to talk issues with President Obama.

This Week's "Not Romney"

This week's "Not Romney" sure looks a lot like Rick Santorum.  And just to make sure voters are well aware of his anti-gay platform, Santorum doesn't disappoint by slamming Rick Perry for not knowing current sodomy laws.

Republicans Are Still Disillusioned About the Iraq War as Ever

I realize there is no chance Rick Perry is going to be the GOP nominee.  He's a miserable person and a pitiful excuse for modern elected officials.  But that doesn't keep him from repeating the same sorry lies his party routinely spouts about the war in Iraq.
Maybe it’s because this war isn’t popular with the Democrats, I don’t know... But Mr. President, our soldiers come first. It comes before party politics. We need to welcome our soldiers home. Give them that parade. Give them that pat on the back.

A person would have to be living on a completely different planet to not realize Bush's war in Iraq wasn't just unpopular "with the Democrats."  No war has ever been as unpopular as Bush's blunder that gave us almost 9 years of death and destruction in Iraq.  Every poll in the world clearly shows that an overwhelming majority of Americans hate the war and do not support it.  A staggering 3/4 of Americans support President Obama's decision to end the war and bring our troops home by the end of the year.  He has kept that promise.

The best thing a person could do who claims to support the troops would be to get them out of a war we never should have been in in the first place.  Throwing a parade is childish.  Rick Perry and his Republicans still can't stomach the fact their legacy is the failure of Iraq and trillion dollars deficits.  It's taken a Democratic president to get our troops out of Iraq, bring the budget deficit back under $1 trillion and kill the person responsible for 9/11.

Ron Paul Cares Nothing About Liberty or Truth

A note about one of my Ron Paul posts below.  In it I write that it is possible Ron Paul never read his newsletters.  I wrote the post days before I knew anything about Andrew Kaczynski and all the videos and articles he has uncovered demonstrating Ron Paul definitely read his newsletters.  He may not have written them but he knew their content and he bragged about them and made lots of money publishing them.

Again, I'll say issues alone are enough to not vote for Ron Paul.  His newsletter, of which he had to know of their content, are just padding for the Paultards to bounce their heads from.

And just for fodder, the many conspiracy theories Paul subscribes to or invents are what his many followers think make him some sort of one man truth-seeking-justice-league.  He's anything but and is more inline with wackos like Alex Jones and other people who hate America.  This Ron Paul classic video of him speaking at the extremely right wing, racists and conspiracy-funded John Birch Society is plenty to keep him from ever being taken seriously ever again.  Well, except by his brainless followers who seemingly think they are always smarter and more informed than everyone in the world.  It's videos like this that convince them they are so smart.

Happy Holidays

Sorry y'all, took some days off over Christmas.  Not sure if I'll be able to do a whole lot over break but I will try for some updates today.

Racist Newsletters Distract From Real Issues

There's a lot of very important and very easy things to hit Ron Paul on other than his newsletters from the 80s.  His insistence the Bill of Rights, Social Security and Medicare (to name a few) are all unconstitutional and as president he would destroy all of them is enough to not vote for him.  It's also enough for the media to have a heyday without having to keep stooping to the racist newsletters that he more than likely didn't write, didn't read and has disavowed hundreds of times.  Him walking out on a CNN interview today because, once again, the newsletters were brought up is silly on his part and irresponsible on the part of the media.

Focus on the issues.  Do Americans really want Social Security destroyed.  Do they really want Medicare ended?  Do they want $1 trillion cut from the federal budget in one year?  Do they want child labor to once again become the norm in America?  Issues do matter and there are plenty to talk about when you're interviewing someone who thinks America in 2013 should look more like it in 1865.

Payroll Tax Cut Fails GOP

You know it's bad when Karl Rove even says the GOP has failed.

Gary Johnson To Run As Libertarian

I realize we are going to spend the next two weeks or so talking about how Ron Paul is a libertarian but the only real Libertarian in the race is now Gary Johnson.

No This is Not the First Time Congress Has Codified Indefinite Detention During War

I've long revered Glenn Greenwald a staunch supporter of civil liberties.  His work on the fallout from the 2001 Patriot Act and its various extensions has been tremendous.  His books How Would a Patriot Act and With Liberty and Justice for some, are incredibly difficult to put down. I read the former all the way through in one day.  It was that good.

Nonetheless, his recent posts about the latest NDAA approval from Congress is startling and very worth the ten minutes it takes to read them (here and here).

In short, the NDAA has a complete disregard for the Constitution and civil liberties.  It's hard to argue with much of what Greenwald writes.  And I won't except for a small discrepancy he keeps repeating.  For example, take this sentence: "First, while the powers this bill enshrines are indeed radical and dangerous, most of them already exist. That’s because first the Bush administration and now the Obama administration have aggressively argued that the original 2001 AUMF already empowers them to imprison people without charges..."

It's true both administrations have argued they have the war power to imprison people without charges or trial.  But what war president hasn't?  President John Adams signed four bills we now know as the Alien and Sedition Acts.  Scores of people were arrested, held without formal charges and even died in custody.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending the four bills by any means.  I'm just saying this isn't the first time Congress has codified the president's wartime power of indefinite detention.  Those who oppose NDAA are making it sound like these are vast new powers for the first time codified in law.  That's just not true.

Lincoln didn't even wait on Congress.  He acted on his own and declared his wartime powers suffice to handle enemies he greatly regarded as American citizens.  He locked them up throughout the duration of the Civil War.  Woodrow Wilson, too, had Congress codify his wartime powers, which led to hundreds of civil rights abuses.  FDR acted more like Lincoln with his assumed wartime powers.  He didn't wait for Congress, he single handily wrote an executive order that effectively placed American citizens in concentration camps throughout the duration of WWII.

Like Greenwald states, during the Cold War, Congress codified indefinite detention again regardless of Truman vetoing it.  It was overruled.

Say what you will about the NDAA trampling the Bill of Rights.  It does.  It's a pathetic excuse of wartime power.  But it's not the first time it's been codified by a bipartisan Congress.  Every wartime president has had the exact same powers, not just Bush and Obama.

The problem with the vast powers granted to the president is not indefinite detention.  It's the war authority.  Unlike past wars, the war on terror will not have a formal surrender signing.  It will not have an end date.  That's what scary.  It's more like the Cold War than any of our other wars.  And according to the president's war powers secured all throughout American history, the president's powers are authoritarian.

The Republican Jihad Is Very Real

Rick Perry tells a 14 year old that gays shouldn't be allowed to serve in the military because homosexuality is a sin in the Bible.

Michelle Bachmann says she has a Biblical view of the law.

Newt Gingrich says he'll arrest judges that try to make America secular, which means judges he doesn't think are following the Bible.

These are, without a doubt, the same views Muslim extremists hold for their countries as well: A non-secular country governed by a perceived Holy Book.  It's American Jihad and it's all Republican.

Another Gay Republican Gets Caught

Normally I don't mention local governments and their elected officials all that much.  TFB's focus is primarily on federal politics and trying to keep track of thousands of localities would be an impossible task.  But our focus on the Republican Walk With God sets precedent for mentioning that yet another Republican elected official has been caught pretending not to be gay and recklessly spending tax payer money.

Gay
Fiscal irresponsibility is nothing new for Republicans. Today's federal debt is overwhelmingly made up of Republican policies left over from Reagan and the Bushes. Their fake concern for moral values and Bible thumping, though, is less well known but is finally starting to go mainstream.

Greg Davis, a Republican mayor of a small town in Mississippi, has been busted shopping at a gay sex store in Canada.  The $67 purchase he tried to bill his town for was questioned by the public as to what exactly their mayor was doing in Canada and why tax money should be used.  Turns out Davis was trying to use tax payer money to support his homosexuality.  But the story gets better.  Given that Davis had been extremely dishonest about his entire life, auditors went back through his many expenses and discovered that the Republican who had always claimed to be a fiscally conservative moral values crusader had billed the town for $170,000 for personal expenses, mainly food and alcohol.  Nothing says moral values and fiscal conservatism quite like spending tax payer money at a gay sex store in Canada.

As with all things Republican and moral, Davis merely needs to follow the trail already blazed by Republicans Ted Haggard and David Vitter and simply tell everyone that God has forgiven him and nobody can dare question that.

Gingrich Says He'll Arrest Judges Who Disagree With Him

One way to crack down on dissent under a Gingrich administration is to arrest the judges who issue the rulings.
SCHIEFFER: One of the things you say is that if you don’t like what a court has done, that Congress should subpoena the judge and bring him before Congress and hold a Congressional hearing… how would you enforce that? Would you send the Capitol Police down to arrest him?
GINGRICH: Sure. If you had to. Or you’d instruct the Justice Department to send a U.S. Marshal.
This latest threat comes on the heels of Gingrich saying as president he would "ignore" all Supreme Court rulings he disagrees with.

Arrest judges, ignore rulings from the highest court in the land, just another day in the make-believe Republican Fantasy World.

As a side note, you'll notice in the second link Gingrich takes his cues from the Bush administration when he says he'll just ignore the Supreme Court.  Wheee!!!

Kim Jong Il Dead

The 69-year-old "dear leader" of the reclusive communist state died of a heart attack on Saturday, state news outlets reported Monday. The ruling Worker's Party proclaimed his youngest son, Kim Jong Un, "the great successor," indicating he would assume his father's post.

White House Lifts Veto Threat

Just got a news alert that the WH has backed away from its recent veto threat of the NDAA.

The passage of the defense authorization has been a stir for quite some time in online media. Opponents of the bill, such as the ACLU and many civil rights groups, say the bill allows for American citizens to be detained indefinitely without trial, without due process or without ever talking to a lawyer.  This is crazy folks.  The provision at hand is this:

SEC. 1031. AFFIRMATION OF AUTHORITY OF THE ARMED FORCES OF THE UNITED STATES TO DETAIN COVERED PERSONS PURSUANT TO THE AUTHORIZATION FOR USE OF MILITARY FORCE.

    (a) In General- Congress affirms that the authority of the President to use all necessary and appropriate force pursuant to the Authorization for Use of Military Force (Public Law 107-40) includes the authority for the Armed Forces of the United States to detain covered persons (as defined in subsection (b)) pending disposition under the law of war.
    (b) Covered Persons- A covered person under this section is any person as follows:
      (1) A person who planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored those responsible for those attacks.
      (2) A person who was a part of or substantially supported al-Qaeda, the Taliban, or associated forces that are engaged in hostilities against the United States or its coalition partners, including any person who has committed a belligerent act or has directly supported such hostilities in aid of such enemy forces.
    (c) Disposition Under Law of War- The disposition of a person under the law of war as described in subsection (a) may include the following:
      (1) Detention under the law of war without trial until the end of the hostilities authorized by the Authorization for Use of Military Force.
      (2) Trial under chapter 47A of title 10, United States Code (as amended by the Military Commissions Act of 2009 (title XVIII of Public Law 111-84)).
      (3) Transfer for trial by an alternative court or competent tribunal having lawful jurisdiction.
      (4) Transfer to the custody or control of the person's country of origin, any other foreign country, or any other foreign entity.
    (d) Construction- Nothing in this section is intended to limit or expand the authority of the President or the scope of the Authorization for Use of Military Force.
    (e) Authorities- Nothing in this section shall be construed to affect existing law or authorities, relating to the detention of United States citizens, lawful resident aliens of the United States or any other persons who are captured or arrested in the United States.
    (f) Requirement for Briefings of Congress- The Secretary of Defense shall regularly brief Congress regarding the application of the authority described in this section, including the organizations, entities, and individuals considered to be `covered persons' for purposes of subsection (b)(2).

SEC. 1032. REQUIREMENT FOR MILITARY CUSTODY.

    (a) Custody Pending Disposition Under Law of War-
      (1) IN GENERAL- Except as provided in paragraph (4), the Armed Forces of the United States shall hold a person described in paragraph (2) who is captured in the course of hostilities authorized by the Authorization for Use of Military Force (Public Law 107-40) in military custody pending disposition under the law of war.
      (2) COVERED PERSONS- The requirement in paragraph (1) shall apply to any person whose detention is authorized under section 1031 who is determined--
        (A) to be a member of, or part of, al-Qaeda or an associated force that acts in coordination with or pursuant to the direction of al-Qaeda; and
        (B) to have participated in the course of planning or carrying out an attack or attempted attack against the United States or its coalition partners.
      (3) DISPOSITION UNDER LAW OF WAR- For purposes of this subsection, the disposition of a person under the law of war has the meaning given in section 1031(c), except that no transfer otherwise described in paragraph (4) of that section shall be made unless consistent with the requirements of section 1033.
      (4) WAIVER FOR NATIONAL SECURITY- The Secretary of Defense may, in consultation with the Secretary of State and the Director of National Intelligence, waive the requirement of paragraph (1) if the Secretary submits to Congress a certification in writing that such a waiver is in the national security interests of the United States.
    (b) Applicability to United States Citizens and Lawful Resident Aliens-
      (1) UNITED STATES CITIZENS- The requirement to detain a person in military custody under this section does not extend to citizens of the United States.
      (2) LAWFUL RESIDENT ALIENS- The requirement to detain a person in military custody under this section does not extend to a lawful resident alien of the United States on the basis of conduct taking place within the United States, except to the extent permitted by the Constitution of the United States.
I'll let my more defense/civil rights legislative savvy readers explain it better. But I read it as saying citizens are only exempt from the requirement in Sec. 1032 that mandates all terror suspects to go straight to military prisons.  It doesn't exempt citizens from being detained by the military for an indefinite period if they are deemed as terrorists or having ties to terrorism, all contained in Sec. 1031.

Am I missing something?  Please tell me I am.

Newt Supports Individual Mandate and Money Saving Means of End of Life Care

Not only did Newt Gingrich support the individual mandate right up until Barack Obama wanted it in his health care reform bill, he also personally endorsed the end of life care that Sarah Palin made oh so famous by declaring them "death panels" that would kill her son.  Awesome.  This is good news for the GOP I'm sure.  It always is.

Republicans Really Hate the Fact Prez Obama Got bin Laden

One of most disappointing aspects of watching the January primary calendar come to a close will be seeing God's Servant, Rick Santorum, once again losing.  It's sad, but I'm sure Fox News will keep him employed.

There are a lot of things to argue about in Obama's presidency.  But suggesting he had nothing to do with the death of bin Laden just isn't one of them.  Republicans, though, have invented an entirely different course of history.  In the Republican Fantasy World, Obama merely "followed through" with Bush's policy of hunting bin Laden.
“Osama bin Laden was a continuation of President Bush’s policy. It had nothing to do with a contingency or a problem that came up on his watch. He simply followed through, which we have been trying to do for 10 years.”
And the president doesn’t deserve credit for doing — he didn’t make a decision, if you will, as to go after bin Laden. That decision had been made 10 years ago.”
I'll gladly write this one a thousand times if I have to.  It bothers me none to keep repeating that George Bush took all focus off of bin Laden and the people responsible for 9/11 when he invaded Iraq.  As if sending 150,000 troops and invading a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 isn't enough to constitute a change of plans, Bush made it formal in 2005 when he officially disbanded the anti-terrorism unit tasked with hunting bin Laden.

So despite what idiot Santorum says, YES Obama did create new policy when he came into office in 2009 and ordered the CIA to refocus its attention on finding and killing Osama bin Laden.  Ending the war in Iraq and refocusing our efforts to Afghanistan was not George Bush policy.  That is absolutely nothing but the policy of the current administration.  And it has been very successful.

Republicans can't accept the reality that Bush failed.  It's like this with everything involving the GOP.  If it doesn't fit their narrative, then lie.  Just like the constant insistence from Republicans that Reagan shrunk government, cut spending and made America free again.  Or the complete lie Republicans tell all the time that George Bush created 10 million new jobs or that he handed Obama an economy with 5% unemployment.  None of that ever happened but in their world it did.  Admitting none of it ever happened would crumble their whole world to pieces so it's easier to pretend.

Budget Deficit Shrinks Below $1 Trillion

Republicans worst nightmare:

Under President Obama, the nation’s budget deficit will shrink to $996 billion for FY 12 reports the Treasury Department.

Upon entering office in January 2009, President Obama inherited from George Bush a $1.41 trillion budget deficit, the largest in history.  Since that time, Obama's FY 10 and FY 11 budgets ran deficits greater than $1 trillion.  This will be the first time since George Bush ran the deficit to over $1.4 trillion that it will shrink to below the trillion dollar mark.

Caution should be had even with the slightest bit of good news.  It will take more than two years to fix 8 years of George Bush.  But any progress on alleviating the deficit is great news.

Ron Paul Will Need To Do Way More Than Win Iowa

Yesterday The Fold Blog made a huge astronomical prediction that Ron Paul will be victorious in the Iowa caucus early next month.  Judging from some emails it seems the term "victory" as used in the post was confusing.

By victory do I mean he'll finish first?  Or runner up?  After all a second place finish in Iowa is a huge victory for Paul who has been written off a thousand times already.  Well, I don't know what I meant by using the word victory.  I suppose I meant he'll be victorious.  Though I don't think that clears anything up.  So I'll come right out and say that The Fold Blog believes Ron Paul will win the Iowa caucus.  I hope that clears up the confusion.

After winning Iowa, I don't see him doing anything else.  He's just not that popular and his ideas for this country are even less popular than him.  His campaign has put millions into Iowa and have worked up a really good ground game.  Plus caucuses are perfect for really loud supporters.  People who are more passionate about their candidate are extra likely to draw others to their side of the room.  This is, after all, how a caucus works.  Paul stands a really good chance of having very loud supporters screaming at others to come join their Liberty Revolution!

The rest of the early primary states Paul is way less popular.  South Carolina he's currently polling in third place at about 9%.  New Hampshire, he's in third place as well.  And in Florida he's at a very distant third with 8%.  All those states are much larger than Iowa and are primary states, which means-- if I'm not mistaken-- GOP rules weigh primary states more than caucus states.  Paul would have to finish much better in SC, FL and NH than single digits if he even stands at chance at the nomination.

It's entirely possible to win Iowa and then the next week lose New Hampshire, the week after that lose South Carolina and then the week after that lose Florida and be finished.  That means by February, unless he manages a couple second place finishes after Iowa, Ron Paul will stand no chance at the nomination once again.  In fact, winning Iowa is not that great of a bellwether for the GOP nomination.  Take a look at past results:

1980: George H. W. Bush won Iowa with 32%.  Reagan won nomination despite losing Iowa.
1988: Bob Dole won Iowa with 37% .  George H. W. Bush won nomination even though he finished third in Iowa.
2008: Mike Huckabee won Iowa huge with 34%.  John McCain won nomination even though he finished 4th in Iowa with only 13%.

Of course if Paul does win Iowa, the Paultards will claim that this is proof he should be the nominee and that they are being screwed out of the coronation by a vast conspiracy contrived by the media, the GOP itself, Barack Obama, Big Government and people who hate freedom. Even though history shows people win Iowa and lose the nomination all the time, it won't matter to them.  It all will be one big conspiracy against Freedom Fighter Ron Paul.

Quickies-- TFB Makes Bold Prediction

  • Not that I'm advocating more drone use but I do find it comical that a group of supposedly "sovereign citizens" in North Dakota were arrested with the help of a remote-controlled drone.  Nothing says 'you aren't sovereign' quite like a predator drone in your backyard.
  • In the 90s, as a reaction to prove just how immoral and engulfed the Clinton White House was with drugs and other debauchery, then Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich proposed the death penalty for marijuana related crimes.
  • Speaking of Newt's unblemished morality, he signed a pledge from a wacko Iowa conservative group to not cheat on his third wife like he did his first two.  He also promised to uphold what he called the "sanctity" of marriage by pledging not to allow gays to desecrate the union of marriage.  I would wager $10 grand on the fact that Newt promised his first two wives he would be faithful as well.  He broke those promises with relative ease.
  • Right wing fearmonger and hate radio host, Michael Savage, has offered Fruity Newty an easy $1 million to drop out of the race within the next three days.
  • And, finally, my prediction for the Iowa caucus is a victory for Ron Paul.  That's right, I think Newt will implode, Romney will get lost in Jackson County Missouri looking for the Garden of Eden and Paul will win.

Truth vs. Gamble of Large Sum of Money

Both Greg Sargent and Steve Benen, I think, are correct about the lack of clarity by the media on Romney's $10,000 wager.

GS:
More broadly, political reporters and commentators are always tempted to seize on such moments as the $10,000 bet as defining of a candidate’s character. But this moment is ultimately almost as trivial as was John Edwards’ $400 haircut…. This broader pattern [of dishonesty] is what deserves the status of national narrative about Romney’s character, not some throwaway line about a bet.

SB:
So why does “10,000 bucks” get picked up far and wide, while “Romney has a problem telling the truth” doesn’t? If I had to guess, I’d say it probably has to do with the media’s comfort — or in some cases, its lack thereof — with various narratives. Establishment news outlets don’t mind saying Romney is an out-of-touch elitist, but they do mind saying he’s an uncontrollable liar.
It's hard to disagree with either of them about the media's lack of clarity.  But I think both Sargent and Benen, also fail to mention just exactly why Romney's inability to tell the truth is being overshadowed by his gamble.  In other words, what's more important than Romney making a wager during a presidential debate is that he's simply lying about the edits in his book.

The paperback version of his latest book No Apologies does indeed omit some sentences he penned in the hardback.  Those omitted sentences just so happen to be about how his health care plan in Massachusetts could be used as a model for all states.  That's plain as day.  And that's exactly what the media is neglecting.

Frum: Fox News Creates an Alternative Knowledge System

Former Bush speechwriter David Frum states the obvious: Fox News creates an alternative knowledge system.

It is a system where George Bush gets portrayed as a very popular president even though he left office with a 24% approval.  A system where the economy only began to tank when Obama took over even though the crisis began in 2007.  A system where Iraq had something to do with 9/11.  A system where Bush is to credit for killing bin Laden.  A system where 8.6% unemployment is greater than 9%.  And a total fabricated alternative knowledge system where George Bush created 10 million new jobs.

Fox proudly trumpets all of the above almost daily.  And the mindless Republicans who watch it cheer it on as if the more false the claim the truer it becomes in their make-believe world.

Who Wouldn't Make the Decision to Kill bin Laden? George W. Bush That's Who

Birther and former GOP candidate for president Donald Trump tries to deride President Obama and his successful operation that killed the most wanted terrorist in world history by asking Fox News "who is not going to make that decision?".

As if Trump needs to look very long or hard for that answer.  George W. Bush flinched when he was put to the task of tracking down Osama bin Laden.  When the U.S. military had bin Laden cornered in Tora Bora in the Fall of 2001, George W. Bush refused to let our troops finish the job.  In 2005, because Bush was not concerned the least bit about bin Laden, he fully dismantled the anti-terrorist unit tasked with tracking him down.  It wasn't until 2009 when Barack Obama took over the White House did the United States revamp its efforts at finding and killing bin Laden.  Last May the president and his operation was successful.  George Bush failed.  Get over it.

*Update:

How much more amazing can the Republican Fantasy World really get?  In their world it was George Bush that led the charge in killing bin Laden.  Fox News and Sean Hannity make sure history gets rewritten to fit their very messed up narrative.

In Sean Hannity’s world, President George W. Bush succeeded in killing terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden.
The Fox News host on Thursday noted that bin Laden was dead “thanks to George Bush.”
During a segment on Time magazine’s top 10 news stories of 2011, Democratic consultant Joe Trippi lamented that the death of the al Qaeda leader didn’t make the list.
“Thanks to George Bush,” Hannity interrupted, ignoring the fact that bin Laden had been killed under President Barack Obama’s watch.
“You’d give credit to Bush?” he asked Trippi. “Because if Obama had gotten his way we wouldn’t have gotten bin Laden, you know that.”
In no world where oxygen is breathed is Hannity's interpretation of history even remotely valid. Bush had been out of office for two years.  As noted above, in 2005 he ordered the anti-terrorism team tasked with hunting and killing Osama bin Laden disbanded.  In 2003, he ordered an American invasion into Iraq, a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 forcing us to officially take our eyes off bin Laden.  In 2001, Bush ordered a halt in the execution of Tora Bora where the U.S. military had cornered bin Laden, officially allowing him to escape.

Bush's actions did anything but lead to the killing of bin Laden.  His actions (invading Iraq, dismantling units tasked to kill him, and allowing him to escape in 2001) all helped bin Laden to live a life of luxury in a mansion in Pakistan.  But not in the Republican Fantasy World.  Bush is responsible for all that is good in the world.  No one with all their chromosomes would ever watch Fox News and trust it.  Yet this kind of make-believe talk by Sean Hannity gets touted in GOP circles as tough guy, Super Patriot talk.  It's scary that the Republican Party is even a major national party in any country let alone America.

Refocusing War Efforts on Al Qaeda is Not Appeasement

I love this...the person who turned his attention away from bin Laden and those responsible for 9/11, who intentionally disbanded the unit in charge of hunting bin Laden and recklessly ordered a homicidal invasion of a country that had nothing to do with the people who attacked our country is considered by the GOP a strong, patriotic, tough guy War Hero.

But the guy who actually refocused our efforts on the people who attacked America, has tracked them down, killed them with remarkable success and brought the war of choice that had nothing to do with 9/11 to an end, is an appeaser.

Republicans are a sick group of people, no doubt.  But this line of idiocy is unwarranted.  I'm glad the president spoke as forcefully as he did.

"Ask Osama bin Laden and the 22 out of 30 top Al-Qaeda leaders who have been taken off the field whether I engage in appeasement... or whoever's left out there."

Newt Has a Gay Sister...

Disgraced former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, who is this week's GOP front runner for the party's nomination, has a gay sister that supports President Obama and his reelection.

Maybe she can go to former GOP flavor of the week Michelle Bachmann's gay therapy sessions to heal herself of her conditions.

Epic Stewart Obliterates Fox News for Christmas Outrage

This is going to shock Fox News viewers, but the people who wrote our Constitution didn't celebrate Christmas.  In fact, like Jon Stewart notes, for the first 67 years after the birth of this nation, Congress was in session on Dec. 25th.

How is that possible you ask?  It's very possible to be exact.  Christmas is very much a modern invention.  The Founders had absolutely no concept of Santa Claus or of Jesus' birthday.  The American government didn't even recognize Christmas as a holiday until well after the Civil War in 1870.  Until then, everyone worked on Christmas if they had a job.

Of course these are simple facts Fox News doesn't want people to know.  They want people to believe that Christmas has always been celebrated in America and that our Founding Fathers created a Christian nation.  Nothing could be further from the truth, however.  Which is why you'll never see or hear anything remotely similar to what I just wrote on Fox News.  Facts are nothing to be concerned about to Republicans so long live their propaganda machine.

No President Added More Debt Than Bush

I'm guessing this was on Fox News but I'm not sure.  TPM's Livewire tracking system is a little confusing.  Hopefully I'll be able to get a better clarification in a moment.

Livewire is reporting it as Romney told Fox News that President Obama is "changing the nature of America" by running up massive amounts of debt.

This is a discussion that should be in every classroom, work place, office water cooler, news channel, internet chat house, and/or blog in America.  President Obama's policies have only accounted for $1.4 trillion of debt since taking office in 2009.

There is no way to make this any clearer.  As it stands, George Bush policies have added over $7 trillion to the federal debt.  His policies, like his tax cuts for the rich, Endless War, and a huge unfunded expansion of Medicare will continue to add to the debt even though he is out of office because the policies are still in place and still no money has been raised to pay for any of it.  No one has added more to the debt in terms of real dollars than George W. Bush.

Reagan tripled the federal debt in 8 years leaving it at roughly $5 trillion when he left office.  The first George Bush then added another $1.5 trillion.  Clinton added another $1.4 trillion.  King George II added another $6 trillion while in office and another trillion or so since he left office.  For a Republican to now be chiding anyone for the federal debt is extremely insane.

If you want to blame President Obama for allowing Bush's policies to continue on without being offset or one penny raised to pay for them, then I'm with ya. But to suggest the president is changing the very fabric of America because of debt is a lie. It should be called out every time Romney and the rest of his Tea Bagging Republicans repeat it.

In Kansas, History Turns On Its Head

Speaking in Osawatomie, Kansas today the president continued his call for Socialism by saying no man should be allowed to get wealthy unless it benefits all of us.

"We grudge no man a fortune in civil life if it is honorably obtained and well-used," Osama said, but added: "We should permit it to be gained only so long as the gaining represents benefit to the community."

Also, furthering his solidification of his socialistfascist agenda, President Obama struck a chord by hoping for a new form of nationalism to take hold in America:
Describing what he called a "new Nationalism," Obama said it "regards the executive power as the steward of public welfare."

"It demands of the judiciary that it shall be interested primarily in human welfare rather than in property, just as it demands that the representative body shall represent all the people rather than any one class or section of the people," he continued.
America can't possibly continue on a path of Islamofascistsocialist tyranny. Imagine what we'll look like a hundred years from now...

It's a good thing Newt Gingrich leads a group with nothing but a track record of moral values, government shrinking, spending cuts, deficit reduction and Liberty Legislation so we have some hope for Revolution! and better futures for our kids.

The Libertarian Intelligentsia Is Not Freaking Out

I find it hard to comprehend "Libertarians in Washington are not happy about how the Republican primary is shaping up."  That's what Pema Levy at TPM 2012 is telling me, however.

Levy goes on to state, "[s]ince the advent of the Tea Party in 2009, libertarians finally began to feel more at home with the right. The Republican Party, at least its rhetoric, was taking on a libertarian tone. They talked about lower taxes, shrinking the size of government, and constitutional originalism, which in theory would eliminate a lot of government regulations libertarians feel interfere with the free market."

None of this makes any sense especially if you have been paying attention these last two years.  Or for that matter, these last 4 decades.

Libertarians don't care about the GOP.  They have their own Party.  It's called the Libertarian Party.  People who care about the GOP are called Republicans.  It's certainly true people with libertarian leanings care about the GOP primary.  But they are not Libertarians.  They are Republicans with libertarian leanings, Ron Paul being Example A.

The whole thing makes about as much sense as saying "Democrats in Washington are not happy with how the Republican Primary is going."  Who cares?  Democrats have nothing to do with the GOP and their thoughts are irrelevant.  People who care about the GOP primary are Republicans.  Libertarians are not Republicans.

Furthermore, the advent of the tea baggers in 2009 has nothing to do with libertarians feeling more at home with the right.  For over 40 years, the GOP's rhetoric has been nothing but talk "about lower taxes, shrinking the size of government, and constitutional originalism."  To mesh libertarian views into this now ignores decades of Republicanism, and decades of never once governing with their so-called core principles.  When hasn't Republican rhetoric been about small government, fiscal conservatism???

This is a very sloppy piece by TPM 2012.  If you vote Republican, you're Republican.  You're not libertarian or Libertarian.  And there's absolutely no proof to suggest the Republican Party, thanks to the tea baggers in 2009, took on a more "shrink government, return to the framer's intent" tone than they have since 1948.

Quickies

  • Took the day off yesterday to tend to sick twin boys.  Even though the weather was crappy and the boys weren't feeling well, still had a pretty good day spending time with the wife and kids.
  • Over the weekend Herman Cain decided to drop out of the race.  I don't care what terminology he uses to define his exit, he's out.  He can call it a suspension or a time out, or claim he was acting on advice from God like he does everything else. He's delusional and narcissistic.  Luckily for him The Fold Blog refuses to accept that he's quitting.  Oh no, he is the standard bearer of a very quacked out Republican Party.
  • Yesterday Big Love Mitt Romney changed his mind on supporting an extension for the payroll tax cuts.  He'll probably change his mind again before the day is over so I don't know why I'm even spending time on it.
  • It seems too that Big Love Romney was so worried about his records as Governor from going public that he spent $100,000 of tax payer money to replace all the computers in his office.  If the old computers were destroyed, which I don't know, I'm sure that's a felony.

One Step Closer to Ending Bush's Endless War Program

I've been critical of President Obama's foreign policy almost from the get-go.  I wanted him to end the war in Iraq the day after his inauguration.  The war is a disastrous foreign policy blunder left over from the previous administration and it needed to end as soon as possible.  I also wanted him to end the war in Afghanistan.  It too was a disaster foreign policy blunder left over from the previous administration.  I saw no reason to continue our hapless efforts.  The president instead escalated the war in Afghanistan, killed bin Laden and has had huge success at tracking down and defeating al Qaeda.  He brought the fight to those responsible for 9/11 and he has succeeded.

This doesn't mean my criticism has been misplaced.  I still think the best thing would have been to end both wars two years ago, bring our troops home, save hundreds of billions and start focusing on restoring America.  I don't regret my stance at all.

Today, though, it appears that finally President Obama is bringing an end to Bush's Endless War program.  By the end of the month there will be just a few hundred troops left in that country.  We'll still be spending lots of money in foreign aid, but not near as much as we are right now nor did when we were merely managing chaos in that country.  So despite my two yeas of critical attitudes toward Obama's foreign policy, I am glad to see that finally Iraq will be over.  The war in Afghanistan is in much better shape than when Obama took over in January of 2009.  The president deserves credit for ending Iraq, refocusing our efforts on bin Laden, killing bin Laden, and making Afghanistan front and center on the war for those responsible for 9/11.

Deep Thought

I'm so glad Herman Cain is the only black person in America with a birth certificate.

Kucinich Wants the Fed Gone

Democrat Dennis Kucinich has put forth a bill that would effectively END THE FED.

Know what this means?  He's a Crazy, Left Wing, Liberal, Tree Hugging Hippy that Hates America.  He should let Ron Paul propose the bill that way it will be a Freedom Fighting, America Loving, Patriotic Liberty thing to do.

Michelle Bachmann Is So Stupid

Michelle Bachmann tells a high school student in Iowa that gay people can get married, just so long as it's to the opposite sex.

Bachmann went on to explain in sordid detail that there are no special rights for people's sexual preferences.  Whatever that may mean, allowing same sex marriage doesn't grant them special rights.  It grants them equal rights.

Her husband is gay, so she should know a thing or two about gays marrying the opposite sex.

Still Lying

Kristen Billy still can't accept reality.  Not only can he not formulate any sort of coherent reply, he now claims Bush didn't create the nearly $1.5 trillion deficit he left for Obama.

He created the deficit? Not the huge trillion dollar ones we have today. Those were a result of the housing and credit crises.

Kristen Billy trying to correct the internet
The whole world knows Kristen is lying.  The day President Obama took office the national budget deficit was well over a trillion dollars.  The blame is squarely on Bush and his Republican administration.  If Bill Clinton had left office with a $1 budget deficit there is no doubt in anyone's mind that Republicans would have thrown him under the bus for fiscally mismanaging the nation's finances.  No one can comprehend what would have happened if Clinton had left Bush a trillion dollar deficit. The world would have ended as we know it. Republicans are not going to continue with this charade of lies any longer.

These lies just like the kind Kristen Billy is trying spread need to be stopped right at their core.  There has to be something morally and habitually wrong with a person that knowingly tries to replace the complete fiscal mess Republicans left this country in with a made up fantasy version of reality.  George Bush was a failure all around.  He doubled the federal debt and created a trillion dollar budget deficit.  There's nothing conservative or responsible about any of that.  And there's certainly no reason to let Republicans lie their way out of it.

Deep Thought

You can't have the top two candidates vying for your party's nomination have two decades of nothing but complete support for an individual health insurance mandate and then try and argue your opponent in the general election is un-American for agreeing.  It doesn't work that way.  In no sane world is such a scenario possible.

Health Care Debate is Over

Even though Newt Gingrich appears to be the current front runner for the GOP nod, it really wouldn't matter in terms of the health care debate if it's Romney or Gingrich.

Here's what's interesting about this debate the MSM isn't reporting.  Both Gingrich and Romney supported the individual mandate right up until Barack Obama put it in his health care reform bill in 2009.  Romney even went so far as to enact his very own individual mandate when he was Governor of Massachusetts.  He also called the mandate "the American" way to overhaul health care.

Gingrich called the mandate essential for a rational system.  He even went so far as to call for a "transfer of finances" (redistribution of wealth) to ensure the poorest among us get health care coverage.  Could you imagine if Barack Obama had said we need to transfer people's finances to make sure poor people are covered the backlash and name calling the GOP would resort to. But when they do it, it's only because they are Super Patriots.

So we have the top two GOP candidates for their party's nomination madly in love with the individual mandate.  The health care debate is officially over.  Whatever they say now is a lie. The mandate was great policy, they praised it, they enacted it, they defended it, they did everything imaginable to make it theirs.  There's no rewriting history on this.  The health care debate is finished.

Huntsman Wins

The candidate with the hottest daughters definitely goes to Jon Huntsman.
