If there's any doubt who is missing the point on the debate between Lisa and I about the MSM applying a double standard (totally intentionally I presume) to Obama on spending, this Fox News article should clear it up.
Obama supports a UN initiative to combat global poverty. The enterprise would increase America's foreign aid spending by $50 billion by 2015, or roughly 0.7% of our GDP. The right wing portrays this as income redistribution, aka socialism (but flooding our financial markets with hundreds of billions isn't?). What the right wing can't fathom is that we won't still be spending $120 billion a year in Iraq and Afghanistan. Yes, the wars must come to an end. To them spending 0.7% of our GDP is reckless and income redistribution. But building roads, schools, bridges and other infrastructure in foreign countries at the rate of $10 billion a month is perfectly sane.
Neither does the article mention that the bill to support the UN initiative hasn't passed and Obama would not be bound by it as president. Even if Obama decides to pledge money to the UN to combat global poverty it's still 1/10 the amount we've already spent in Iraq. The GOP just can't fathom foreign aid that doesn't entail air raids. I bet if Obama added a cluster bombing or two to the UN pledge the GOP would lock step march down the road as they are doing now for Bush and McCain.
