The most important thing in the world right now to the Republican members of Congress is that their already extremely wealthy campaign donors become even wealthier from the immediate drilling of oil in Alaska and off our shores. There is nothing more important to them than their multi-billion dollar financiers and it's evident from their continued political stunt on the House floor.
The Hill reports the gang of Republicans currently hijacking the Floor plan to stay for at least another two weeks, right through the Democratic convention.
Let's just say the Republicans get their way and we immediately begin drilling in ANWR and off our coastline. If that were to happen the oil from the new drilling would not reach the market for at least two decades. That's a far cry from the immediate relief consumers would see that the Republicans are claiming. Instead the only immediate benefit would be seen by ExxonMcCain and the other large Big Oil companies, and that's really all the GOP cares about.
For the handfull of Republicans admitting the new drilling won't have an immediate impact on prices, they are in turn saying it would at least provide a psychological boost to the market. Maybe so, but at least be honest enough to admit a psychological boost is a far cry from energy independence and an even farther cry from an "energy plan"-- something this country has not had under complete Republican rule.
The Republicans have a presidency to hold on to and they have a minority government about to lose more seats in Congress. They need to keep their donors happy and their own pockets as cushioned as possible. The best way to do that is to drill for more oil anywhere Big Oil says it wants to. If all goes well for them, Big Oil gets richer, Republicans keep the White House and they minimize their loses in Congress.
